Description Crossford, Suspension Bridge View showing span

Date 5/5/1978

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 536175

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Footbridge, Crossford, Lanarkshire This is a most unusual bridge, over the river Clyde. It has five spans, two long central ones over the river, and short accommodation ones at each side, two on the south and one on the north. The spans are supported on concrete piers, and also suspended. This view shows the southern main span. Its unusual features are the arching of the steelwork below the deck, and the suspension cables above. The deck was covered with wooden planks, which have now rotted away. The metal sections of which this bridge is built are very light, and also well-preserved, suggesting that they may be made of malleable iron rather than mild steel. The suspension cables are made of rods, which also suggests wrought iron construction. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
