Scope and Content Engraving by Charles Cordiner of St Nicholas Church, Aberdeen Founded before 1151, St Nicholas (known locally as the Mither Kirk) was one of the largest medieval burgh churches in Scotland. The structure was completed in 1508 with the building of the choir. In 1540 it acquired collegiate status. In this image of St Nicholas, the tower, spire and East Church can be seen. Today, the only remaining areas of the building illustrated are the south transept to the left and St Mary's Chapel at the front behind the fence. At the Reformation, the church was stripped of its altars and divided in two. The West Church was rebuilt by James Gibb in 1751-5 and the East Church was rebuilt in 1834-7 by Archibald Simpson. Due to a fire the tower and spire had to be rebuilt in 1874. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
