Scope and Content Argyle Brewery, St Andrews, Fife This was a good example of a medium-sized country-town brewery, built round a courtyard. There were two main ranges, one three-storey, and the other two storey, with a three-storey brewhouse at one end. This view shows the two storey range, with the brewhouse at the far end. The red and white brick chimney was integral with the rear wall of the brewhouse, and served the coppers. By 1978 the complex was used as a bottling plant only. Breweries like this were vulnerable to competition from the big city breweries, and few survived the 1950s. This one retained much of its original character, and the brewhouse was one of the finest surviving in the 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
