Scope and Content Hawthorn Brae, No 46 The Causeway, Duddingston Village, Edinburgh The Causeway, Duddingston's main street, is a narrow lane which runs from the gates of the church the length of the village. It has a number of 18th- and 19th-century houses, as well as the village's only public house, the 18th-century Sheep's Heid Inn. Hawthorn Brae, high up on the side of the hill on the north side of The Causeway, has a commanding view over the village to the south. It is a Georgian villa built c.1820, but with Victorian additions and a grand entrance leading to a columned doorpiece. The Causeway has a 'mysterious' entry from Holyrood Park by way of a long narrow walled lane that breaches the boundary wall, and joins the street opposite the Sheep's Heid Inn. This was the original entrance to the village for pedestrians from Edinburgh. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
