Scope and Content West Silvermills Lane, Stockbridge, Edinburgh West Silvermills Lane, a narrow lane which runs between Henderson Row and the east end of St Stephen Street, formed part of the village of Silvermills where silver ore from Torphichen, West Lothian, was once refined in the village mills. This view shows the narrow lane, paved with granite setts, as it curves to meet St Stephen's Church at the east end of St Stephen Street. Remains of the old silver mills can be seen on the east side (left) of the lane. In 1607 quantities of silver were found at Torphichen, west of Edinburgh, and mills were set up on the Water of Leith to refine the ore. King James VI bought the mine and mills, but the yield of silver dropped, and the project was later abandoned. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
