Scope and Content Bootscraper, No 115 Henderson Row, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Henderson Row, a street of mainly 19th-century tenements, was built along the old road from Stockbridge to Canonmills in an area that once formed part of the village of Silvermills, where silver ore from Torphichen, west Lothian, was refined. This elaborate cast iron bootscraper, at the foot of the stone steps leading to the street door, is supported by 'legs' shaped like the limbs of animals. It was used by visitors to scrape the mud and dirt off their boots before entering the common stair. Henderson Row was named after Alexander Henderson of Press, who was Lord Provost of Edinburgh 1823-5, when building started in the street. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
