Scope and Content Finials, No 56 Henderson Row, Stockbridge, Edinburgh Henderson Row, a street of mainly 19th-century tenements, was built along the old road from Stockbridge to Canonmills in an area that once formed part of the village of Silvermills, where silver ore from Torphichen, West Lothian, was refined. These finials, the heads of the railing uprights or balusters, show some of the imaginative ironwork of Georgian Edinburgh. The decorative finial (centre) punctuated the sequence. Iron railings, a distinctive feature of Georgian Edinburgh, serve as safety barriers at pavement level and at the sides of steps. They consist of cast-iron balusters, slotted through a wrought-iron coping rail, and topped with plain or ornamental finials. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
