Scope and Content Shops, St Stephen Street, Stockbridge, Edinburgh St Stephen Street, a narrow street on the south side of the Water of Leith, curves round at its east end to meet the northern New Town. It was built in the 1820s with a parade of small shops along its entire length. These typical Georgian shops have double doors, panelled at the base and secured by an iron bar and padlock. Iron balconies, built over the basement area, run under the large astragalled windows to allow customers closer scrutiny of the window displays. St Stephen Street has shops on two levels, with stone steps going up to ground-floor shops, and down to basement ones. The little shops came to new life in the 1970s, selling antiques, old clothes and collectors items. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
