Scope and Content Aerial view of Drummond Castle, Perth & Kinross This aerial view shows the castle on the left, with its simple stone gatehouse 'guarding' the ornate turreted mansion house behind. The huge 17th century-style parterre (garden with beds arranged to form a pattern) and terraces below the castle is laid out in the form of an enormous saltire (Scottish flag) centred around a sundial, with further ornamentation provided by many statues, temples and pavilions. Drummond castle had well established gardens by the 17th century, but the present parterre was not laid out until the 1820s by Lewis Kennedy (estate factor and former gardener to the Empress Josephine) for Clementina Drummond and her husband 21st Baron Willoughby de Eresby. The garden was replanted by Phyllis Astor in the 1950s. Drummond Castle was built c.1490, but the complex visible today consists of a gatehouse which was added in 1630-6 by architect John Mylne III (1611-67) and an L-plan mansion built for the 4th Earl of Perth in 1689. The mansion was extended in the 18th or early 19th century, and remodelled in Baronial style into its present form by architect G T Ewing in 1878 and 1900. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
