Scope and Content Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded in 1786 as a coke-smelting iron works. As latterly existing it was substantially as rebuilt from the late 1930s to provide molten iron for steelmaking at the nearby Clydebridge Steel Works. This view shows the benzole plant at the coke-ovens which supplied coke to the furnaces. This plant redistilled coal-tar liquids recovered from the gas produced during the coking process, to produce saleable products. The combination of the iron works and steel works created Scotland's first integrated steelmaking complex. Clydebridge made steel by the open-hearth process, and the phasing out of this process resulted in closure in 1978. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
