Scope and Content Clyde Iron Works, Tollcross, Glasgow This works was founded in 1786 as a coke-smelting iron works. As latterly existing it was substantially as rebuilt from the late 1930s to provide molten iron for steelmaking at the nearby Clydebridge Steel Works. This view shows the works from the north east, with the three blast-furnaces on the left. The tall silver cylinders were the stoves for heating the air blown into the furnaces to smelt the iron. To the left is the iron ore stockyard crane. The combination of the iron works and steel works created Scotland's first integrated steelmaking complex. Clydebridge made steel by the open-hearth process, and the phasing out of this process resulted in closure in 1978. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
