Scope and Content Roadway and gutter, Moray Place, Edinburgh Moray Place, designed in 1822 by James Gillespie Graham as the huge polygonal showpiece of his new housing development on the Earl of Moray's estate, has been described in the way of private building as 'the most splendid thing in Edinburgh'. The roadway round Moray Placeis built from granite setts and has a gutter, also built from setts, to drain water to the garden-side. The original whinstone pavement around the central wooded garden still survives. The Earl of Moray, having decided to develop his estate in 1822, set up detailed planning rules including instructions about the width of the pavements, the construction of the sewers, and the appearance of the iron railings enclosing the central gardens.
