Scope and Content Banff Harbour, Banffshire The first part of this harbour was built in 1775 by John Smeaton, and was formed by an east breakwater pier and a north pier. The basin so formed had an intermediate pier. Telford in 1816 added an outer north pier, and extended the 1775 east pier. This view shows the harbour from the north, The east pier is in the centre. The Telford extension is lower than the original Smeaton structure. The original Smeaton north pier is to the right, with the intermediate pier behind it. This harbour was used both by fishing boats and by trading vessels, but owing to silting it was supplanted by Macduff, on the other side of the mouth of the Deveron. As a result Banff illustrates, almost unchanged, the work of two famous early engineers. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
