Description Edinburgh, Commercial Wharf, Warehouse View from SE showing SE front

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 519412

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Former Bond 9, Leith, Edinburgh This five-storey warehouse, with its own quay on the navigable section of the Water of Leith, was probably built as a grain store. It later became a bonded warehouse, storing whisky, and in the 1960s was used as a cooperage. This view shows the building from the east, with its central hoist. It is a very typical early-mid 19th century warehouse, plain, but well-proportioned. Note the quay in front of it, which could be used by the typical trading vessels of the time. The building was empty and for sale in 1977. It was subsequently converted into flats, an early example of a process which has transformed Leith from a run-down maritime area into a popular place to live and work.
