Scope and Content Part of Grangemouth Oil Refinery, Stirlingshire This was a part of the large refinery complex which was built to separate aromatic hydrocarbons (such as benzene) from paraffinic hydrocarbons, using sulphur dioxide as a solvent for the former. This view shows one of the vacuum pumps used in connection with the removal of the sulphur dioxide from the aromatic hydrocarbon mixture after separation. The pump was driven by the electric motor on the right, behind the grille. This plant had closed by 1977, and was awaiting dismantling. It was an example of the type of equipment used in a whole range of chemical-related industries where separation of liquids and gases was based on differences in their boiling points.
