Scope and Content Drawing of the burgh of Old Inveraray, Argyll and Bute The original burgh of Inveraray was established as a burgh of barony by the 1st Earl of Argyll in 1474 and extended from the south-east side of the present Inveraray Castle to the shore of Loch Fyne. In the centre of the burgh market place there was a octagonal structure. It was erected around 1650 and served as the base of the cross which may have come from the medieval church at Kilmalieu. The cross now stands on the pier in Inveraray. The location and appearance of the burgh was recorded by Paul and Thomas Sandby, stationed in Inveraray in 1746. In 1744 Archibald, 3rd Duke of Argyll, had taken the decision to move the town to a new site to the south. This process took 30 years. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
