Scope and Content Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar This is a rare survivor of the country town breweries which were until the 1950s still fairly common, supplying beer in barrels to local public houses. Belhaven has modernised and expanded while retaining the shells of its traditional buildings. This view shows the former malt kilns. The one on the left has a typical brewery ventilator, while the others, with the sweeping curves of their sloping sides, are more like distillery kilns. By 1978 all the malt used in the brewery was bought in. Belhaven is now, in 2000, the last of the smaller traditional breweries surviving in Scotland, as the other survivor, Maclay's brewery in Alloa, has been superseded by transfer to a more modern brewery.
