Dunbar, Belhaven Brewery, Malting Block General View

SC 517076

Description Dunbar, Belhaven Brewery, Malting Block General View

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 517076

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar, East Lothian This is a rare survivor of the country town breweries which were until the 1950s still fairly common, supplying beer in barrels to local public houses. Belhaven has modernised and expanded while retaining the shells of its traditional buildings. This view shows the former malt barns, used as stores in 1978. The top floor, with its covered hoist, was used originally as a barley store, with two malting floors below. The tops of two of the three kilns can be seen on the left. Belhaven is now, in 2000, the last of the smaller traditional breweries surviving in Scotland, as the other survivor, Maclay's brewery in Alloa, has been superseded by transfer to a more modern brewery.
