Scope and Content Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar, East Lothian This is a rare survivor of the country town breweries which were until the 1950s still fairly common, supplying beer in barrels to local public houses. Belhaven has modernised and expanded while retaining the shells of its traditional buildings. This view shows the fermenting vessels, in which the malt liquor, after it has been treated with hops, and cooled, is fermented with yeast to make beer. There are three vessels in this view. Belhaven is now, in 2000, the last of the smaller traditional breweries surviving in Scotland, as the other survivor, Maclay's Thistle Brewery in Alloa, has been superseded by transfer to a more modern brewery.
