Description Perth Bridge Detailed view of arch

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 516999

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Perth Bridge, Perth This large nine-span masonry bridge was designed by John Smeaton to carry the main road north of Perth over the river Tay. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, and cast-iron footpath extensions were made in 1869 by AD Stewart. This view shows the bridge from the south east, with the footpath extension of 1869 supported on cast iron brackets. The parapet is made of cast iron sections, smooth on the footpath side, but ribbed on the other side. This is one of four bridges in Scotland designed by Smeaton, the others being at Coldstream, Banff and Kirckonnel, Dumfries-shire. This is the least altered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
