Scope and Content Perth Bridge, Perth This large nine-span masonry bridge was designed by John Smeaton to carry the main road north of Perth over the river Tay. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, and cast-iron footpath extensions were made in 1869 by AD Stewart. This view shows the bridge from the south east. Note the generosity of its proportions. The circular features were originally holes through the bridge, to lighten the load on the piers, but were walled up, probably during the alterations of 1869. This is one of four bridges in Scotland designed by Smeaton, the others being at Coldstream, Banff and Kirckonnel, Dumfries-shire. This is the least altered. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
