Scope and Content Written on the mounted print: 'Oban, South Pier, Piermaster's House' Photographer: 'CHC' (Kitty Cruft) Date: 'June 1964' View of piermaster's house on south pier, Oban, Argyll and Bute This piermaster's house and the adjacent South Pier were constructed for the Duke of Argyll, proprietor of South Oban, in 1814. At this time, Henry Bell was establishing a pioneer service between Glasgow and Oban with his steamship, 'The Comet'. This house is a small single-storeyed building with a hipped and slated roof. The north gable wall to the right has a small round tower on each corner, which have conical roofs and single arch-pointed windows. Attached to the tower on the left is a wrought-iron bracket which would have supported a guiding light. Between the towers is a recess which formerly would have held a notice-board.
