Scope and Content South Portland Street/ Cartlon Place Suspension Bridge, Glasgow This bridge, of the flat-link type devised by Captain Samuel Brown, was constructed to replace a temporary wooden bridge built in 1833. The engineer was George Martin, and the masonry pylons were designed by Alexander Kirkland. This view shows the bridge from the mid-point, looking south. The stiffened deck was installed by Bell and Miller in 1870-1. At the same time the chains were lengthened so as to hang lower, further increasing the stiffness of the span. As can be seen, the bridge has two chains on each side, with alternate pairs of suspender rods from each chain. The pylons are in the form of triumphal arches. The clear span is 126m.
