Scope and Content United Co-operative Baking Society's workshops and stables, Moffat Street, Glasgow This complex was built for the United Cooperative Bakery Society, which supplied bread and other bakery products to retail co-operative societies, to stable the horses that pulled its delivery vans, and to garage and service the vans. This view shows the complex from the east. The tall block on the right was the stables, and the two-storey range on the left housed the vans on the ground floor. The use of red and white brick on the upper floors echoed the style of the bakery. This building was demolished in the late 1970s, following the demolition of the bakery itself. The decline of retail co-operation in the post-war years put the UCBS out of business. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
