Scope and Content St Andrew's Suspension Bridge, Glasgow Green and Moffat Street, Glasgow This suspension footbridge was built to replace a ferry used by workers in the mills on the south bank of the Clyde, who lived in the east end of Glasgow. It was designed by Neil Robson, engineer, and Charles O'Neill, architect of the pylon ironwork. This view shows the bridge from the north east, with the United Co-operative Baking Society's bakery in the background. The pylons are cast iron, and the flat-link suspension chains and deck are wrought iron. The quality of the pylon design was due to the location of the bridge on Glasgow Green, then a fashionable park. There are two chains on each side, giving the span additional stiffness, needed as this was a heavily used bridge. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
