Scope and Content Mile End Mill, Anchor Mills, Paisley, Renfrewshire This large brick spinning mill was part of the Anchor thread mills, founded 1812 by J and J Clark. This mill was built after the firm amalgamated with J and P Coats to form the largest sewing thread company in the world. This view shows the mill from the north west. Note the ornamental treatment of the two towers. The right-hand one was a stair tower and the left-hand one a water tower. This mill was designed by WJ Morley of Bradford, a leading mill designer. Most of the Anchor Mills have been demolished, but this block survives, though disused since the early 1980s. The tall and elegant chimney seen behind the mill in this view, and disused for much longer, also still stands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
