Muirkirk, Gasworks General view from SSW showing works

SC 513770

Description Muirkirk, Gasworks General view from SSW showing works

Date 6/8/1977

Collection John R Hume

Catalogue Number SC 513770

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Muirkirk Gas Works, Ayrshire This small gas works was one of the last coal-gas plants in Scotland. Like most such works it had been adapted throughout its life, and most of its equipment was typical of mid 20th century gas-making practice. This view shows the works from the south west. The vertical tubes are the condenser, which cooled the hot gas by passing it up and down the pipes. The building behind the condenser was the retort house. This works closed in the late 1970s, and has been demolished. The Scottish Gas Board, which owned the works, made a film of its operation as a record of the small coal gas works that were until the 1950s very widespread in Scotland.
