Scope and Content Muirkirk Gas Works, Ayrshire This small gas works was one of the last coal-gas plants in Scotland. Like most such works it had been adapted throughout its life, and most of its equipment was typical of mid 20th century gas-making practice. This view shows the open-sided shed which housed the two purifier boxes and, behind the elevated tank, the washer and scrubber. The retort house was on the left. The older of the two retort-house chimneys is on the left. This works closed in the late 1970s, and has been demolished. The Scottish Gas Board, which owned the works, made a film of its operation as a record of the small coal gas works that were until the 1950s very widespread in Scotland.
