Scope and Content Harbour, Elie, Fife This harbour was rebuilt c1855, and is formed by an island linked to the shore by a causeway, part of which is a quay, protected by a breakwater pier extending west from the island. There is a four-storey granary, probably 18th century, on the quay. This view shows the granary from the south west. It is a very plain harled rubble building, its only unusual feature being the wide access door at first floor level in the west gable. This may have been inserted to allow boats to be stored in the granary. This harbour was rebuilt for the shipment of grain, and for accommodating fishing boats. Later in the 19th century the size of boats increased, and the fishery moved further east, to St Monans, Pittenweem and Anstruther. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
