Scope and Content Wemyss Bay Station and Pier, Renfrewshire This station was built by the Caledonian Railway to replace the train-shed constructed in the 1860s by the Wemyss Bay Railway. Like its predecessor it was designed for interchange between railway and steamer services. This view shows the curved ramp leading down from the station to the pier. The light airiness of the design is apparent. The glass cases in the middle distance housed paddle-box ornament from famous Clyde steamers. The station was designed by Donald Mathieson, the Caledonian's Chief Engineer, and by James Miller, architect. The interior featured smooth curves to encourage rapid transfer of passengers and luggage between train and steamer. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
