Scope and Content Singer Sewing Machine Factory, Kilbowie Road, Clydebank, Dunbartonshire This factory was transferred from Bridgeton, Glasgow to a canal-side site, in 1882, and quickly became the largest sewing-machine factory in the world. There were two sections, one making domestic, and the other industrial, sewing machines. This view shows a small belt-driven end-milling machine. The workpiece is moved to the rotating cutting tool by pulling on the lever on the right. This machine is probably one of those transferred from Bridgeton in 1882. The works closed soon after this photograph was taken, and the buildings were demolished. The site is now a business park. The Singer company introduced mass-production into Scotland.
