Scope and Content Nos 17-25 Royal Circus, Edinburgh, from the north-west Royal Circus, designed by William Playfair in 1820 based on an original plan by Robert Reid and William Sibbald in 1801-2, was built as two sweeping crescents on opposite sides of a great circle, cut diagonally by a road running downhill to Stockbridge. Playfair's design for the circus was very simple: two crescents each maintaining a strict horizontal line despite the fall of the ground. The houses are three storeys high, with the middle and end blocks having an extra attic storey. William Henry Playfair (1789-1857), more than any other architect, earned Edinburgh its title, 'the Athens of the North'. He designed many Classical buildings, often on difficult and awkward sites, throughout the city. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
