Scope and Content The former John Kay's wine merchant's shop (which became Kay & Company), No 39 Jamaica Street, Edinburgh Jamaica Street, built in 1807-19 in a shallow site between Heriot Row and the already projected Royal Circus, was the only substantial development of workers' housing in the northern New Town. The street was almost totally demolished in the 1960s. This building, with a little gable over a simple shop front, is a survivor of the old Jamaica Street. Originally built as a mews building for India Street, it became John Kay's wine merchant's shop c.1830. It was converted, in 1976, into Kay's Bar. John Kay's wine merchant's shop supplied fine French wines, whisky and tea to the northern New Town for almost 150 years. Wine was kept in huge oak casks, and sold by the jug. Whisky, watered to a suitable strength, was sold in stone jars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
