Scope and Content Basement, Cumberland Street, Edinburgh Cumberland Street, at the foot of the hill running down from Queen Street Gardens, was built 1824-8 to provide housing of lesser quality than its southern counterpart, Northumberland Street, for the lower middle and better-off artisan classes. This basement, originally part of the main door flat above, had an entrance by a curved stone stair from the street for tradesmen, delivery boys and servants. The wrought-iron railings on either side of the top of the stone steps have pineapple finials. Pineapple finials were often found on either side of an entrance, either to the main steps leading to the street door, or, in this case, to the steps leading down to the basement area. The pineapple was the traditional sign of welcome. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
