Scope and Content Alumina works, Burntisland, Fife This works was established by the British Aluminium Co Ltd to make pure aluminium oxide (alumina) to be reduced to aluminium metal in their smelters in the Highlands, the first of which was at Foyers, on Loch Ness. This view shows the older part of the works from the south east. The grass in the foreground covers an area on which waste from the works was tipped for many years. Some of the buildings in this view date from the foundation of the works. This works still operates, taking in bauxite imported through Burntisland and treating it with caustic soda to dissolve the aluminium oxide in it, adding acid to precipitate the oxide from the filtered solution and drying it.
