Scope and Content Detail of fireplace in bedroom of Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Grange House is a fine Classical Italianate villa which was built c.1820. It has a smooth ashlar frontage, with two storeys and three bays. The side and rear walls are of coursed rubble masonry. The façade features a Roman Doric columned portico. This photograph shows the fireplace in a bedroom which is now in use as a nursery. The simple fire surround is painted white and contrasts with the decorative tiled panels. These depict ornate Neo-Classical candelabra with inset lion motifs. These tiles with their Neo-Classical designs would have been very fashionable in the 19th century. Excavations of Roman antiquities at Pompeii and Herculaneum had popularised antique decorative devices in architecture and interior design. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
