Scope and Content View from east of dining room of Grange House, No 22 York Road, Edinburgh Grange House, a Classical Italianate villa, was built c.1820. It is constructed of smooth ashlar masonry with a Roman Doric portico and balcony to the front, whilst the sides are composed of coursed rubble masonry. It retains fine interior decorations. This shows the dining room with its elegant wooden fireplace, decorated with swags of flowers and urns. The room is dominated by the arched window, with its original shutters. A plasterwork cornice decorates the ceiling. The colour scheme is modern. Window shutters often survive in older houses. They were originally intended to keep the room warm, block out light and sound from outside, and ensure privacy. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
