Scope and Content Argyll Furnace (Craleckan Ironworks), Furnace, Loch Fyne, Argyll This is the furnace of an ironworks established in 1755 to smelt imported iron ore with charcoal made from local woodland. The works closed in 1812, but the remains of the furnace are still well-preserved. This view shows the furnace from the south east. The furnace stack is the battered section on the angle, with the roofless blowing and charging house on the left and the casting house to the right. The scaffolding was for repairs. This furnace was partly repaired by the Ancient Monuments Division of the Scottish Development Department in the early 1970s. It is the best-preserved charcoal blast-furnace in Britain, with its lining intact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
