Date 1977

Catalogue Number SC 510323

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Argyll Furnace (Craleckan Ironworks), Furnace, Loch Fyne, Argyll This is the furnace of an ironworks established in 1755 to smelt imported iron ore with charcoal made from local woodland. The works closed in 1812, but the remains of the furnace are still well-preserved. This view shows the opening through which the blast air was blown into the furnace from bellows set in the space in front of the opening, and worked by water power. One of the lintels above the opening is dated 1755. This furnace was partly repaired by the Ancient Monuments Division of the Scottish Development Department in the 1970s. It is the best-preserved charcoal blast-furnace in Britain, with its lining intact. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
