Description Bargeddie, Drumpark Brickworks, Staffordshire Kiln Detail of firehole

Date 1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 510230

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Drumpark Brickworks, Bargeddie, Lanarkshire This brickworks specialised in making heavy-duty engineering bricks, using clay from a pit on the site. Latterly it had a Staffordshire-type continuous kiln, eight rectangular, and one round, downdraught kilns. This view shows one chamber of the Staffordshire kiln. This kiln had 16 transverse-arched chambers, arranged so that bricks could be loaded, fired and unloaded from different parts of the kiln at the same time. The works closed in 1977 and had been demolished by 1980. It was one of very few engineering-brick works in Scotland. Such bricks were fired at a higher temperature than common bricks, and were stronger and had lower moisture absorption. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
