Scope and Content Drumpark Brickworks, Bargeddie, Lanarkshire This brickworks specialised in making heavy-duty engineering bricks, using clay from a pit on the site. Latterly it had a Staffordshire-type continuous kiln, eight rectangular, and one round, downdraught kilns. This view shows two blocks of three rectangular downdraught kilns, set on either side of a passageway. The large arches gave access to the kiln chambers, and the smaller ones were the fireholes. These kilns were latterly oil-fired. The works closed in 1977 and had been demolished by 1980. It was one of very few engineering-brick works in Scotland. Such bricks were fired at a higher temperature than common bricks, and were stronger and had lower moisture absorption. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
