Description Dumbarton, Woodyard General view from SE

Date 1/5/1977

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 509470

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Dumbarton Distillery, Dunbartonshire This distillery was built in 1938 by Hiram Walker (Scotland) Ltd, and contained both a continuous still of American design, producing grain whisky and a malt whisky distillery known as Inverleven. On an adjacent site was a warehouse and blending plant. In this view the distillery is right of centre, with the massive warehouse and blending plant to its right. All the buildings are steel-framed and clad in terra-cotta brick. The tallest of the distillery buildings houses the continuous still. The parent company of Hiram Walker (Scotland) Ltd was Canadian, and the investment was to cope with growing demand for Scotch Whisky in North America. The complex now belongs to Allied Distillers.
