Scope and Content Weir of Kelvindale Paper Mills, Kelvindale Road, Glasgow Kelvindale Paper Mills had its origins in the 18th century Balgray Snuff and Paper Mill, bought c1840 by Edward Collins and Son and much rebuilt and extended over the years. The company provided houses for some of its employees. This view shows the weir on the river Kelvin which provided water for the mill through a lade on the right. The ruined buildings were probably associated with the Balgray Mill. The weir is V-shaped, of the so-called self-clearing type. Self-clearing weirs have their edges at an angle to the flow of water, so that tree-trunks and other debris floating down tend to collect at the ends, where they can be easily removed. The mills have since been demolished and replaced by private housing. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
