Scope and Content Collins Institute, Collins Street, Glasgow This was an institute providing recreational and educational opportunities for the employees of William Collins and Co, whose large Herriot Hill Stationery and Printing Works was nearby. This view shows the institute from the north east. By 1976 it had been in other use for many years. The building to the right was the Townhead Baths, built by Glasgow Corporation, and to the left is part of a development of model tenements. Collins became one of the foremost British book publishing houses, abandoning their stationery interests. The founder of the firm, William, was a devoutly religious man, and a philanthropic employer, a tradition carried on by his successors. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
