Scope and Content Kinauld Tan Works, Currie, Midlothian This was a large five-storey leather works set in a steep sided valley, and one of a number of industrial units in this industrial community on the outskirts of Edinburgh. This view shows the works from the north west. Note the unusual construction, with the sides built with solid vertical elements, possibly made of reinforced concrete, with lighter infill panels. This works was owned by J Hewit and Sons Ltd, tanners, curriers and leather merchants Currying is the process of working materials into tanned leather to make it supple and give it a polished surface capable of resisting wear.
