Scope and Content Boatbuilding yard, Arbroath, Angus This was one of two yards in Arbroath which were building wooden fishing boats until the early 1990s. This one was at the west end of the harbour, and was purely a building yard; the other, at the east end, also repaired vessels. This view shows a boat under construction on a slipway. The oak frames, which determine the shape of the vessel, are all in place, and planking is beginning. To the right is the end of the iron box that was used for steaming planks for the hull. Steaming the planks softens them so that they can be bent to fit the curves of the hull. Wooden fishing boats like this were built until c1990, when decline in the fishing industry led to fewer, larger vessels being built of steel. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
