Broomhill Bridge General view

SC 509123

Description Broomhill Bridge General view

Date 24/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 509123

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Wooden bridge, Broomhill, Inverness-shire This is a large wooden road bridge across the river Spey. It has 15 spans, eight of them over the river, and the rest flood spans, as the Spey floods frequently. The bridge was designed by John A Mackenzie. This view shows the bridge from the west showing the four flood spans at the north-west end, and the river spans, five of which are of larger spans than the rest, and have above-deck trusses with iron-strapped joints. This is the finest bridge of its type in Scotland. Others at Boat of Garten and Boat of Insh were not so refined in design or construction, and the former has been demolished. The Broomhill bridge was overhauled c1990. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
