Scope and Content Oykel Viaduct/ Shin Railway Viaduct Invershin, Sutherland This viaduct over the river Shin is the largest engineering work on the Sutherland Railway, promoted by the Duke of Sutherland to take railway communication north from Ardgay to Dunrobin, where it joined his private line to Helmsdale. This view shows the viaduct from the north west. It has a 70.1m main lattice truss main span, with the railway running on top of the ironwork. There are two approach spans on the south side and three on the north. The viaduct was designed by Joseph Mitchell, engineer for what became The Highland Railway, and Murdoch Paterson who had been his assistant, and who succeeded him.
