Scope and Content Rattray Head Lighthouse, Aberdeenshire This lighthouse was built by the Northern Lighthouse Board and designed by DA Stevenson. It is situated on a reef off Rattray Head, and is unusual in having large base containing the engine-room for the foghorn mounted on top of the base. This view shows the lighthouse from the shore. The base is faced with granite, and the tower with white glazed bricks. The tower is set towards the back of the base, with the foghorn in front of it on the seaward side. As with all the Board's lights this is now automated. As the light could be reached from the shore by wading at low tide, the keepers' families were given houses in a two-storey flat-roofed block set in the sand-dunes close to the shore.
