Broomhill, Tollhouse General View

SC 507607

Description Broomhill, Tollhouse General View

Date 20/8/1976

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 507607

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Tollhouse, Broomhill, near Dunecht, Aberdeenshire This is a good, largely unaltered example of a small bow-fronted tollhouse, situated on the A944 Donside road from Aberdeen at the A97 north-south road at Kildrummy. It is of a pattern standard on the Donside road. This view shows the tollhouse from the south east. It is of granite ashlar construction. The piended roof is a common feature of tollhouses. There is a small, sympathetic extension at the west end. Tolls on Scottish roads and bridges were phased out during the 1880s, but as the tollhouses were generally well-built many of them remained in use as private houses, as in this case.
